Modern Spirit, co-founded by Dr. Joe Tafur, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to demonstrating the value of spiritual healing in modern healthcare by illuminating the intersection between biology, emotion, and spirituality. As a non-profit dedicated to scientific research, community-building, and educational programs, we are working to expand our culture’s capacity to heal.
Dr. Joe Tafur serves as the Executive Director. As an Integrative Family Physician, Curandero, Author, and Speaker, he and his team develop educational programs that advance the integration of Western medicine and ancestral wisdom through research, community-building, and service.

Scientific Research
The Modern Spirit Epigenetics Project (MSEP): A groundbreaking substudy conducted in collaboration with MAPS and the University of Southern California (USC). MSEP investigates the biological basis of psychedelic healing by analyzing the epigenetic impact of transformative healing experiences, including those observed in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD.
Ayahuasca Morphology Research: Research dedicated to the biological study and understanding of the sacred Amazonian plant medicines.
Educational and Community Programs
The Online Courses: An educational program designed as a supplement to Dr. Tafur's books, The Fellowship of the River and Medicine Song . The courses introduces students and practitioners to the art and science of ancestral spiritual healing techniques and their relevance to psychedelic-assisted therapies.
Modern Spirit Retreats: Offering Sacred Ceremony in Psychedelic Therapy retreats in Arizona and South America, guided by Dr. Tafur, to explore the role of sacred ceremony in deep emotional healing.
The Modern Spirit Podcast: Hosted by Dr. Tafur and Natasha Pentin, the podcast features interviews with scientists, researchers, healthcare providers, healers, artists, and patients, exploring the role of spiritual healing in modern healthcare.
